Walnut storage features
A storehouse of vitamins and minerals, walnuts, is especially relevant in early spring in the diet of both adults and children, starting from the age of two. It is during this period that the reserves of natural vitamins in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables end. And this useful food product is always at hand if stored properly.
How to peel properly
It would seem that it could be easier than taking a hammer, striking harder - and you're done. However, in this case, the core will break up and mix with the shell. It will be inconvenient and long to choose surviving pieces of cores. There are several ways to clean walnuts from shells at home, which will allow the kernels to be kept intact and not deformed. Thanks to these methods, waste (except for the shell itself) will practically not occur.
Whole kernels are not only pleasant to eat, but also convenient to use for confectionery purposes - for example, for decorating cakes. Before you begin chopping nuts, you must definitely prepare them for this procedure: place them in the oven, preheated to + 200 ° C, for 10-15 minutes. The hard shell prepared by the above method can easily be cracked using the methods described below.
In the slider package
After the fruit has cooled, place three pieces in a dense polyethylene bag-slider. After you hit this bag on a chopping board, the shell will definitely crack, because it has become very fragile due to heat treatment in the oven.
The package is necessary so that the shell does not scatter in different directions throughout the apartment. Next, remove the shell and kernels from the bag and separate the halves of the kernels from the inedible parts. So you get six halves.
A bottle of champagne
The next type of cleaning requires an empty wine bottle with a concave bottom. Place the walnut on a chopping board and effortlessly hit it with the concave portion of the bottle. It is imperative that he fall precisely in the hollow at the bottom of the bottle. Sometimes you need to turn the nut over and repeat the beat. The kernel often remains completely intact using this method.
If you have such a tool in your household, it will not be difficult for you to peel walnuts from the shell. The plumbing wrench has a limiter that allows you to set the squeezing parts of the device to a specific compression width. Fruits are approximately the same size, so you have to do the markup only once.
Then you need to insert the nut in the gap between the squeezing elements of the key and gently press it down - the shell will instantly crack. If you don’t have such a key at home, you can use pliers, but be careful to compress them so as not to flatten the core completely.
This method is very effective, but only suitable for tidy people. It is necessary to insert the point of the knife into the blunt end of the nut, at the junction of its halves, where the side of the fruit is blunt and wide, and not sharp. Then slowly loosen the shell at the junction until it is divided into two parts. After that, remove the cores, helping yourself with the same knife.
The sharp side of the hammer
It is possible to easily and accurately break the shell with a hammer without damaging the valuable interior. However, you need to know where to beat and which side of the hammer to strike.
Important! The sharp side of the hammer will reduce the impact area, thereby not allowing completely crush the fetus.
Place a waffle towel on a wooden cutting board and place a walnut on it.Use the sharp, not blunt, side of the hammer to strike perpendicular to the line connecting the halves.
How to dry nuts
Drying a nut is a very important and necessary stage in preparing it for storage. Fresh walnuts contain about 40% moisture and are therefore easily rotted. If all the drying conditions are not met, save the fruits for a long time will not succeed.
Did you know? In ancient Babylon, commoners were forbidden to eat nuts. The rulers feared that, using a product so useful for brain activity, ordinary people would surpass them in terms of intelligence.
If your farm has a dry wooden shed or canopy, You can scatter the harvested crop in one layer on natural material or on hay and leave the fruits to dry naturally for a period of 2-3 weeks.Drying in the open air is not recommended, since during this time, most likely, at least once it will rain and spoil the whole process - in this case, the fruit will not be suitable for storage.
This old home drying method has other drawbacks. For example, during a period of such a long stay on the ground, insect pests or microorganisms can penetrate into the fruits, which can completely destroy the crop.
Natural drying in wire trays
In this way, modern farmers use, whose harvest volumes are quite large. Thrifty owners strive to preserve the highest quality product in full, while allocating minimal investment to the drying process itself.
A dry, well-ventilated room with intensive air circulation stands out for storage. Previously, special containers are made of dry timber - lattice trays. Nuts are washed in cold water and laid on a drying tool in one layer. Then the trays are placed in special racks. The latter are made in such a way as to ensure effective air circulation between each layer.
The crop thus prepared is allowed to dry for three weeks. Such fruits are suitable for consumption, commercial sales, as well as high-quality planting material. At home, you can also apply the above method. Once you have made a rack for yourself with trays-gratings, you will forever provide yourself and your family with a properly stored crop from your tree.
The method of artificial drying is much more expensive than natural, but quick and effective. If you need to prepare nuts for long-term further storage, they must be dried without shelling, in the oven, preheated to + 90 ° C, 2-3 hours.
Then the oven must be turned off and the product left there for as long as it takes to cool. After this treatment, your crop can be consumed gradually throughout the winter period.
Shelled nuts can also be dried in the oven, however, large stocks should not be made, since without their natural protection the kernels crumble and quickly deteriorate. The kernels must be laid out on a baking sheet covered with foil so that they do not come into contact with each other and dried for 10 minutes in a preheated oven up to a temperature of + 180 ° C. After 5 minutes, the kernels must be mixed.
How to store unpeeled nuts
Undoubtedly, unpeeled nuts are stored much longer than peeled nuts. The shelf life depends on the variety, the correctness and timeliness of harvesting, drying and storage method.
Ideal for storage is a dry, cool place where the fruits will be in containers made of natural material: in canvas bags or in wooden boxes.
Important! If you initially protect the nuts from moisture, they will remain in excellent condition until the end of spring.
How to store peeled nuts
The kernels can be stored for up to 1 month at room temperature. After this time, they lose their taste, may become rancid, dry out too much, crumble or frown. A glass jar or plastic container is most suitable for storing peeled nuts.
Some housewives, who have separate freezers, store cleaned kernels in them in sealed plastic bags for up to 1 year. It is very convenient to store a pre-shredded product in the freezer for baking confectionery or other purposes.
Important factors for successfully storing nuts are:
- Compliance with low temperature conditions.
- Moisture protection.
- Peeled nuts are best stored without additives (sugar, salt, honey, etc.).
- Polyethylene is only suitable for storing nuts in the freezer, in other cases only natural materials are suitable.
- Ground nuts are stored significantly less than whole nuts, and preferably in a freezer.
- The kernels should be frozen in small portions, which can be consumed completely after defrosting, otherwise they may deteriorate with a frequent change in temperature.
- Inshell nuts can be stored until the next harvest; peeled kernels are stored for no more than 6 months.
How to store green nuts
Green nuts are very healthy thanks to a substance called juglone. This is a unique antiseptic substance, contained in sufficient quantities in young walnut fruits and the outer green pericarp. Therefore, to maintain immunity, as an antiviral, antimicrobial agent, it is important to use green fruit jam and young “milk” fresh kernels.
Did you know? High-quality activated carbon is made from burnt walnut shells.
To regularly consume a nutritious and healthy nut product, you should spend your efforts not only on its collection, but also on proper storage. Properly prepared stocks will provide you with nuts until the next harvest.
